Frequently Asked Questions
-
When can I start injecting the wax into the mold in the Hot Wheels Car Maker?
-
DO NOT start injecting wax until Car Maker prompts you to “Please pull down handle.” If you start the injection before this, it can cause blockage in the mold. Blockage can be cleared using the included tool (see CLEANING section in the instruction sheet).
-
-
How do I know when the wax injection is complete in the Hot Wheels Car Maker?
-
Once Car Maker instructs you to pull the handle, you must immediately pull it all the way down in one continuous motion until you hear “Complete.” For best results, DO NOT pump handle when pulling it down and complete the injection within 2-3 seconds. If you do not pull it all the way down to complete the injection, Car Maker will keep repeating the phrase, “Please pull down handle.”
-
-
Why are the colors mixed on my Hot Wheels Car Maker car body?
- If you have inserted different colored wax sticks next to each other, you may get some color blending (in which the wax from the two adjacent sticks mix when creating the car body).
-
How can I create a Hot Wheels Car Maker car body that is one solid color?
-
In order to create a solid one-colored car body, you must insert multiple wax sticks of the same color next to each other.
-
-
How many wax sticks should I insert into the Hot Wheels Car Maker?
-
The very first time you use Car Maker, you need to insert 2 wax sticks. Car Maker comes pre-loaded with 1 wax stick. The second stick you insert is not meant to fit completely inside the machine – it will protrude through the top. After you have made your very first car, only 1 additional wax stick needs to be inserted every time. Please note that ALL wax sticks must be inserted with the point side down.
-
-
What happens if I cannot press down the handle of the Hot Wheels Car Maker all the way and don’t hear “Complete?”
-
If you cannot press the handle down, have an adult unplug the machine, wait ten seconds and then plug it back in to reset. Car Maker will automatically go into the cooling cycle. Do not unplug during this time. After you hear “Cooling Complete” and the door opens, try the following:
-
Check the mold for blockage. See CLEANING section in the instruction sheet.
-
Look into the front window on the machine. Ensure that there is a wax stick in the heating chamber and that the wax stick above it is properly aligned.
-
-
Why is it that when I close the door, it won’t lock and the Hot Wheels Car Maker keeps saying “Close door?”
-
You need to hold the door closed and press the button above it to lock the door. Do not try to open the door during the heating or cooling cycle when it is locked.
-
-
What happens if I hear the word “Error” from the Hot Wheels Car Maker?
-
If you hear “Error,” ask an adult to unplug Car Maker from the wall, wait ten seconds and then plug it back in to reset. Car Maker may automatically go into the cooling cycle. Do not unplug during this time. If you continue to hear “Error” after multiple resets, this may be an indication of a mechanical problem with the door switch; please contact Consumer Services via service.mattel.com for assistance.

-
Do I need to wait for the wax to cool before opening the mold of the Hot Wheels Car Maker?
-
Yes, for best results, allow the wax to cool for a few minutes before opening the mold. Twist the mold slightly (as you would an ice cube tray) to break the wax free. You can also run the mold under cold water, which will help speed up the cooling process. If the car body is wet, be sure to dry it completely before applying labels. Remove car body from the mold within 10 minutes. If the body is left in the mold for any longer, the wax may begin to crack.
-
-
What happens if there is excess wax on the car body when I remove it from the mold of the Hot Wheels Car Maker?
-
Excess wax on the car body can be easily trimmed by hand or with the supplied design tool.
-
-
What happens if I cannot insert or remove the mold from the Hot Wheels Car Maker?
-
If you cannot insert or remove the mold, locate the tabs on both sides of Car Maker (underneath handle), push them up and try again.
-
-
Why didn’t I get a fully completed Hot Wheels Car Maker car body?
-
If your car body came out only partially completed, see instructional video or try the following:
-
Ensure you are inserting enough wax sticks into the machine and they are positioned next to each other in the proper alignment (point side down). Remember, it’s normal for one of the wax sticks to protrude from the top.
-
Ensure the handle is pulled all the way down in one continuous motion and the injection is completed within 2-3 seconds until you hear “Complete.”
-
Ensure the mold has been thoroughly cleaned before starting your cycle.

What are the best kind of batteries to use in Fisher-Price® and Mattel® products?
A. We recommend using alkaline batteries with our products, as they are great for long-term use and help optimize performance. We don't recommend using Carbon-Zinc batteries. While Carbon-Zinc batteries may work well with low-power devices, they can drain after a short period of time and cause certain products to not function properly.

How do you assemble the rubber band in the Hot Wheels rubber band launchers?
On the underside of the launcher, each end of the rubber band should be wrapped around a peg on each side of the main launcher and then doubled up and hooked around the center tab of the moveable portion of the launcher.
Here is a picture of an assembled rubber band launcher!
