Designed by Pininfarina, the mid-engined 250 LM, a purebred road racer, got off to a slow start when the sports car governing body refused to sanction it as a "gran turismo" (GT) car. The organization thought Ferrari had taken it too far beyond road car parameters. After getting the all-clear, the 250 LM lived up to its name by winning the 24-Hour Le Mans race in 1965.
